Upon my initiative, the following organisations have been established:

  • JustPeace

JustPeace is a transnational organisation for high-impact projects, research, and exchange in the areas of peace, justice and human security. Its members are civil society organisations from countries of the Global South, and experts from around the globe. We apply a human-centered approach and bring innovation into practice. JustPeace is operating since March 2024.

  • Institute for Law and Society in Afghanistan

Academics from Afghanistan and many other countries founded the ILSAF in March 2022. The association serves as a platform for research, exchange, projects and education. Its main event is the annual Afghan Legal Studies Conference. My co-directors Suhailah Akbari and Idris Nassery and I manage ILSAF on a pro bono basis.

  • Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law

The MPFPR provides legal assistance to countries and societies in transition or conflict. I prepared much of the concept as early as 2007. Five years later, a team designed the organisation in detail and founded it 2013. I served as managing director until the end of 2017 and worked in many countries, including Myanmar (picture).

  • Hamida Barmaki Organisation for the Rule of Law

The HBORL was a non-governmental and non-profit organization that provided assistance to different actors in the areas of rule of law, access to justice, human rights and social peace in Afghanistan. I founded it with local partners in 2013 and served as pro bono director until 2016. The organisation suspended operations in August 2021.

  • Association of Young Legal Historians

In 2005 Nikolaus Linder and I developed the concept for a yearbook and an association as a solid basis for the annual Europan Forum of Young Legal Historians. Our ideas were discussed in Lucerne in 2006 and in 2007, the AYLH was established in Seville. It’s still alive and rocking!
